View plays a significant role in composition of a shot. Sometimes, the compression and isolation can make an otherwise ordinary object quite eye-catching. Rythm composition within a compressed frame plus the placement of complementary hues of these cacti could be spoilt if I had used a wider angle to include some of the completely green cacti and the huge stone vase in which these cacti were planted. Educated study of the subject and preconcieving of frame is the first step to achive any successful shot any given day.

Simplification and color ? you're right. That's the idea. The diagonal lines are always energetic. The ratio of the blue-orange ( two complementary colors on the color wheel) must be 65-35 to deliver the right simulatneous contrast.

the existance of the primary colors ( Yellow-Red-Blue ) on the YRB color wheel or Red-Green-Blue in the RGB system can energized a shot and create a pleasant view through color contrast.

For this shot , I used Macro mode on my 20D and previewed the shot to find the best angle. The focal point to blur the background ( which was so distracting, it could easily mess up the shot) is 135mm x 1.6 crop factor on APS-C size image sensor ( that of 20d). With the bokeh ( technical name for the blur ) I brought out the green hue of the backgroung to create a simultaneous contrast ( since green and red ,when 50-50, can intinsify each other pretty much. The shot is made as simplified as possible for the eyes not to drift away from essential features and to stay on the tulip.

This image was taken during a jaunt to Damavand resort.

The piece of drifting cloud high above looked pretty smart so I went for the shot with wide 28mm on my Canon 20D DSLR coupled with a Hamma circular polarizer filter to enrich the sky's azure blue chromacity.

This shot is another example of how a simplified shot can work. The ratio between negative elements ( background) and the positive elements ( the object(s) to be viewed) should be 60-40 respectively. To consider the hue relations of the elements within a shot is one thing a photographer should never forget to contemplate before depressing the shutter button, so it's wise to fill yourself in with color theory stuff as far as you can just as painters do.

This is my son. He happened to be peacefully leaning on to the chair when I grabbed my gear and took the shot, including some parts of the chair to frame the face and used the golden mean the intersecting triangles to place the face members in to each triangle to creat harmony. I also put a catch light into his eyes to spirit the eyes. I trusted my 20D's AWB ( auto white balance ) which is alittle warmer than some photographers really want, but it's still fine with me since I like a bit warm tone.
